Mobile App That’s Got Your Back

Yesterday I revisited some interesting mobile apps that were released in 2012 and one got me thinking…

Have you ever wanted to visit somewhere but have been put off by reviews that make your destination or event of choice sound dangerous?! Take running with the bulls in Spain for example. Or, heading to England to see a soccer game between two huge rivals, like West Ham and Mill Wall. Maybe you’re a shift worker who has to walk through a dark dingy car park to your car at the end of your shift and it gives you the heebie jeebies.

Well, the iWitness app allows you to draw your own conclusions based on social content AND in threatening situations claims to have your back.

iWitness allows you to explore Social Media content from a specific time and place. You simply put in the date and time for running with the bulls in Spain and read all of the social content that was posted at that exact time, by people taking part in the event. You can draw your own conclusions and make an informed decision based on the crowd sourced information.

If its the dingy car park that’s your concern, then the app has security features that allows you to ‘arm’ it when entering the car park. Should you feel threatened, simply touch the screen to start recording video and audio footage that will be sent on to a secure server. If the situation escalates, you can press the screen again to initiate a call to emergency services and a series of text messages will be sent to your list of emergency contacts. Wow.

I really like the idea of drawing on the social content generated at previous events and know I’d find it really useful when planning a trip, especially abroad.

What do you think? Do you think the app would be useful for you? Why or why not?
